Tips for losing weight by laughing

Tips for losing weight by laughing
By: Marissa Anteby

My clients have given up on asking me for diet tips. They know I don’t believe in dieting. You’re probably wondering, “How can such an ardent advocate of wellness education, not promote limitations?” The answer is so simple, it often goes overlooked. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, putting excessive emphasis on food is counter-productive. The focus should be on enjoying -not restricting. I encourage people to look for the positive, before the negative side to any undertaking.

Want to test this theory out with me? Ok, go outside and get moving. Do something. Do anything. Make sure to use your arms and legs. Walk, roller skate, bike ride, play tennis, etc. (Yes, pushing a stroller or filling a shopping cart does constitute using your arms and legs!) Pay more attention to feel-good activities, and less on eating. You’ll find that gradually there will be a shift in your attitude towards recognizing more fulfilling experiences each day. Even mundane chores will transform in to opportunities to exercise. Believe me, getting out to the gym is not a necessity, lifting overflowing laundry baskets will have you breaking a sweat in no time!

Oh, you’d rather sit on the couch and watch TV. Alright, you can do that, and during the commercials, do a few jumping jacks and push ups. You should even put the remote back on top of the television set, so you have to get up every time you want to change the channel. Invent ways to become more active. When you’re doing errands, park further away from the store so you have to walk a greater distance, to get to and from your car.

Above all, laugh. Yes, laugh. Laughing heartily out loud makes your chest rise and fall, which in turn tightens your abdominal muscles, massages your heart, and balances oxygen intake. Even your face gets a workout when you laugh. The act of laughing uses up to 15 facial muscles. Laughing bolsters your immune system and reduces colds and coughs. It’s a great stress-reliever, and a fun way to clear your mind.

Think of the following quotes as inspiration to laugh more:
- “Laughter is inner jogging.” – Norman Cousins
- “Laughter is America’s most important export.” – Walt Disney
- “Laughter is an instant vacation.” – Milton Berle

Michele says: “Inner jogging” and deep water running are the only form of running I can do for a while! But, getting from the couch to the Oreos are actually done at a jogging pace, come to think of it!
